Manchester Christmas Lights Switch-On

On Thursday 10th November, myself and over twenty thousand other people including families, children and students flocked to Albert’s Square in Manchester to witness the Christmas Lights Switch-on. With Christmas only six weeks away, the event was a perfect way to get us all the festive spirit in time.

There were a variety of guest performances ranging from Mike and Chelsea from Key 103, a Michael Buble tribute act, the Manchester Community Choir, actress Suzanne Shaw, Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts, and rapper TinchyStryder.

In an interview, Nicola Roberts said she was honoured to be invited to kick-start the festive season in Manchester. She said: “It was a great event and you can see from the faces in the crowd what it means to people and how much they enjoy it.

“I love Manchester and have a lot of fond memories of the city and doing Christmas shopping here so it was an honour to be asked to switch on the lights.

“You get used to appearing in front of big crowds but there’s something extra special about this time of year and with all the decorations up, the city looks amazing.”

After the performances had finished, the moment we had all been waiting for finally arrived. After a countdown, the switch was pushed down and more than 400,000 eco-friendly Christmas lights had been switched on. These will be on display in Manchester until January the 5th. After the lights had been switched on, there was a spectacular fireworks display which lit up the sky.

All in all, it was a fantastic event, and you could tell a lot of effort had been put into it on behalf of the Manchester City Council. The lights switch-on is always a pivotal moment in marking the start of the festive season.
