Enhancing Learning at Hollings

Anita Mitchell

Staff  have been working tirelessly in association with the students union at the Manchester Metropolitan University’sHollings Faculty; situated near Fallowfield, known locally as the ‘Toast Rack’ to further improve their students’ learning experience.

During induction week, a T Shirt competition was launched on the Hollings Faculty Moodle site by Senior Learning and Teaching Staff Anita Mitchell & Chris Mitchellto encourage students’ engagement and learn how to use Moodle (the university’s new Virtual Learning Environment).

The competition was met with great enthusiasm and the standard of entries received from students studying across the whole faculty was very impressive to say the least.

The winning entry, featured below, was designed by Andrew Searson a level 5 Fashion Buying student, who was awarded his Apple iPad prizeby the Dean of Faculty, Colin Renfrew during the launch of the newly furbished Hollings Student Social Learning space.

We managed to catch up with Andrew and his Programme Leader GianpaoloVignali during the awards event on the 01st November, to find out where he got his inspiration for his iconic T Shirt design which will go on sale at the end of November. Andrew admitted that :

“[…] I was totally surprised to have won the competition especially as my studies are more business focused,  but it made me realise that the critical thinking and transferable skills that I  have developed so far whilst studying at Hollings have enabled me to objectively respond to the brief. I think this was a great competition, as it helped me to get to grips with finding my way around Moodle during the induction period […] the iPad will be a great asset too, especially during my lectures and tutorials as I have seen other students use them to annotate their notes as the lecturer is talking and the Face Time function will help me to contact my peers when we need to do group work […] I can’t wait to start using it”
